Healthy Families: The Olson's Story
Dan and Jennifer Olson cook dinner with their children every night in their own home. You'd never know they used to go to bed hungry or slept in their car.
You’d never know because Family & Children's Center intervened. When Jennifer was expecting their first baby, a doctor at St. Clare Health Mission referred the couple to Family & Children’s Center’s Healthy Families program.
There they were partnered with a family support worker who helped the Olsons prepare to become parents, connecting them with community resources to find good jobs and decent housing and stocking their home with the supplies needed to care for an infant.
Once baby Ethan came along, their family support worker continued working with the family. Together, they made certain that Ethan saw a physician regularly and received scheduled immunizations. They also worked together to achieve goals that Dan and Jennifer set for themselves individually and as a couple. They learned about budgeting and saving and began to believe they could have better tomorrows.
Today, Dan is a supervisor in the warehouse where he works, and Jennifer is a stay-at-home mom to their two children. (Ethan has a little sister now.) They are self-sufficient, have purchased their first home and always have plenty of food on the table.
Aside from their two healthy children and own home, they are perhaps most proud to be able to give back to the community that gave them a hand up. Each month, the couple sets aside $10. It’s for the next couple that needs Healthy Families.
