Stories for Good: Family & Children’s Center focuses on child abuse prevention (Winona Daily News)
WINONA, Minn. (Winona Daily News) – Family & Children’s Center (FCC) is raising awareness and inspiring action this April during Child Abuse Prevention Month. Blue kid yard signs may be seen at FCC’s offices, including 601 Franklin Street, Winona, and locations of two valued community partners, Dahl Automotive and Merchants Bank. Blue kids will also be placed at FCC locations in La Crosse and Viroqua, WI.
The blue kids serve as a visible reminder of the prevalence of abuse across the United States.
According to the National Children’s Alliance, 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 13 boys are victims of child abuse.
While the blue kids are only up during April, the concern exists year-round, even in Winona. Tragically, two-thirds of abuse and neglect cases go unreported. You can change a child’s life by speaking up and referring families to one of FCC’s abuse prevention, intervention, or treatment programs.
“It is important for people in Winona and everywhere to remember that child abuse is a problem that exists in our community,” said Leah Morken, PhD, FCC Clinical Director. “Acknowledging that child abuse is a problem here is the first step in preventing it.”
FCC operates two child advocacy centers, Stepping Stones in La Crosse and Matty’s Place in Winona. These centers collaborate with local and state agencies to provide prevention, early intervention, and treatment programs.
There are signs of abuse and neglect you can look for:
- Unexplained injuries, such as bruises
- Extreme behaviors, such as excessive crying, truancy, or running away
- Poor hygiene and unsuitable clothing
- Excessive fear of parent(s), caregiver(s) or going home
- Depression or excessive crying
- Constant hunger, tiredness, or lack of energy
- Sudden change in behavior
- Attention-seeking behaviors
- Poor peer relationships or inability to relate to children of the same age
To engage the community and draw attention to this important issue, FCC is once again partnering with the Winona County Primary Prevention Project to present ‘A Safe Family’ art contest. Formerly known as the ‘Hands Are For’ art contest, the event showcases the talent of local students with art pieces that highlight safe ways families can come together. The community is invited to view the pieces and vote for their favorite on April 10 from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at FCC’s 601 Franklin Street office in Winona. Winners will be announced on April 17 at a celebration at WNB Financial in downtown Winona.
