Meet April’s Featured Respite Provider: Alex
Respite Providers are a vital part of caring for children and youth aged birth to 18 experiencing behavioral, emotional, medical, and/or physical challenges. This program is designed to meet specific individual and family needs while maintaining collaboration with other service providers and legal guardians. This valuable service provides families of special needs children the opportunity to balance the many challenges of life. The breaks provided allow family members time to meet their other vital family needs. Providers can be couples, single persons, or families.
As part of an ongoing series, FCC would like to introduce you to April’s featured provider, Alex!
We asked her a few questions about her experience with the respite program:
How long have you been a respite provider?
I’m a new provider!
What made you want to apply to be a respite provider?
While I am new to providing respite care within my home, I am not new to the respite world. I previously worked as a respite case manager, where I supported families in accessing services and worked closely with children with a wide range of developmental, behavioral, and mental health needs. Through that experience, I gained a strong understanding of how important it is for families to have reliable, safe, and compassionate care.
During my time in that role, I saw firsthand the growing need for respite providers and how long waitlists can impact families. My husband and I have always felt called to support families who are navigating the unique challenges that can come with raising children with additional needs. We wanted to be part of the solution in a more direct and meaningful way, and becoming respite providers felt like the perfect next step for our family.
What is your favorite part of being a respite provider?
I truly love being a respite provider because it allows me to build meaningful connections with each child, learn about their unique strengths and personalities, and support them in a way that feels safe and positive. Just as importantly, it allows families the opportunity to take a breath, recharge, and know their child is in good hands.
You can help support children and parents by becoming a respite provider today. For more information, please contact Louise Campbell at (608) 668-2221 or lcampbell@fccnetwork.org.
