Local nonprofit plants blue cutouts to raise child abuse awareness (WKBT)

WINONA, Minn. (WKBT) — A local nonprofit created a striking visual reminder of child abuse prevalence by planting blue cutouts of children outside its offices as April marks Child Abuse Awareness Month.

The Family and Children’s Center installed the display to draw attention to the widespread nature of child abuse across the United States and encourage community members to take action when they suspect neglect or abuse.

“We want to make sure people are speaking up when they hear something. Being the voice for the kids without a voice when they’re going through any type of neglect,” said Karrie Hahn, director of programs at the Family and Children’s Center.

The blue cutouts represent children who have experienced abuse, creating a powerful visual that passersby cannot ignore.

Child Abuse Awareness Month has been observed nationally since 1983, with organizations across the country working to educate the public about prevention strategies and reporting procedures.
